Jeep Wagoneer vs. Grand Wagoneer: How "Grand" Are the Differences?

The Jeep Wagoneer and Jeep Grand Wagoneer were recently reintroduced to the market after a hiatus for the "Wagoneer" name.  Both models have been successful so far, despite some confusion about their differences.  Some of that confusion is no doubt attributed to the newness of the models. There is no such confusion over the distinction between the Jeep Cherokee and Grand Cherokee models, after all. So in all likelihood, consumers just need time to learn about the different qualities of these two new SUVs. To aid that process, we've broken down the key features, and differences, found between the Jeep Wagoneer and the Jeep Grand Wagoneer.

New Jeep Grand Wagoneer Features

The most common point of confusion about the Jeep Grand Wagoneer and Wagoneer is whether or not they are the same vehicle. Some believe that the Grand Wagoneer is simply a higher trim level of the Wagoneer. The Grand Wagoneer indeed boasts more luxury features than the Wagoneer. But they are two distinct vehicle models, and Jeep markets them each accordingly. The key difference is the market space occupied by each model.

The Grand Wagoneer is billed as a luxury full-size SUV model, meaning that it comes standard with a higher-performing powertrain and includes more luxury features than the Wagoneer.

The 2022 Jeep Grand Wagoneer has four available trim levels: Series I, II, III, and the Obsidian trim. Each comes standard with a 471-horsepower 3.6L V8 engine. The Grand Wagoneer also comes standard with four-wheel drive, as opposed to the standard rear-wheel drive on the Wagoneer.

Once inside the Grand Wagoneer, some other key differences stand out. The most striking and obvious difference is the massive touch screen display along the front dashboard. Some of the screen space is optional, but the Grand Wagoneer maxes out at 75 inches of surface space on its front row display screens--and that does not even include the optional rear seat entertainment screens available on some models. Other luxury highlights such as walnut trim and supple leather seating help create an atmosphere of comfort and elegance unique to the Grand Wagoneer.

New Jeep Wagoneer Features

With the Grand Wagoneer occupying the luxury space on the SUV market, the Jeep Wagoneer is billed as a mainstream SUV. The Wagoneer trades some of the high-end features of the Grand Wagoneer for a more affordable price tag. And as a mass market full-size SUV, the Wagoneer is still near the top of its class.

The 2022 Jeep Wagoneer comes standard with a 392-horsepower, 5.7L V8 engine. While slightly less powerful than the Grand Wagoneer, the Wagoneer leaves little to be desired in terms of performance.

The Wagoneer does have a slight advantage in seating capacity. Some models can seat up to eight passengers, while every Grand Wagoneer tops out at seven passengers. For the 2022 model year, the Wagoneer has three available trims: Series I, II, and III.

The "mass market" label on the Wagoneer does not mean that there is nothing luxurious about the Jeep Wagoneer. This brand-new model still offers features like wireless connectivity and divide charging, as well as a 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display.
